Professor Bengt Holmström
Nobel Prize Winner for Economics in 2016 and Paul A. Samuelson Professor (Emeritus) at MIT
Financial intermediation has evolved over several centuries, adapting itself
to the needs of commerce and consumers demands and responding to
technological developments. Today, the pace of change is accelerating in
the wake of a massive digital transformation. Electronic payment systems,
digital currencies, programmable money, smart contracts, instant credit
based on machine learning, tokenization of assets – the list goes on. Trying
to assess where we are headed and what the opportunities and risks are,
involves a lot of uncertainty. In the first instance, this talk is about
understanding the past – the logic of our old systems – including the recent
crises they went through. Drawing on this, Professor Holmström will interpret recent developments and make some guesses about future developments.
